Discovered Happiness

“Before the Portuguese discovered Brazil, Brazil had discovered happiness.” (de Andrade 94) This one line, phrase, sentence, or whatever you shall call it has been running through my mind since I first read Oswald de Andrade’s The Cannibalist Manifesto. I keep thinking about how so many people from before modernity up until now live/ lived lives that are beautiful and rich, full of love and passion; then suddenly plagued by the evils that capitalistic colonizers harm their native lands. The colonizer tries to strip everything away from these people and make it seem like their way of life is not “good enough.” The colonizer destroys their monuments, memories, and monarchies just to rule over them. I wonder how did it feel; you are happy with the life you have then it changes almost over-night because one ship/plane has landed in your homeland? I could not possible imagine the pain and the confusion one must feel. I think this class has really made me think more and more about not only colonization from the formation of modernity, but modern-day colonization that happens in today’s society.
